A Word From David
Sabbath Time
There’s a lot of pressure these days to fix things. There’s a whole lot that is broken in our world. It can feel unfaithful to take time away from the work of repairing the breaches in our world.
While our moment is particularly fraught, I don’t think the general sense of needing to be about the faithful work of tending and mending is anything new under the sun.
I’ve been learning Carrie Newcomer’s wonderful song If Not Now, Tell Me When which is about exactly what you’re thinking having read the song title. But even amidst the fierce urgency of now, Sabbath is necessary. There’s a reason it’s one of the 10 Commandments. Faithful people have always understood the need to rest.
Moreover, I’d add to the Fourth Commandment some sub-categories specifying the need not only for rest but also for joy, creativity, and play.
This is kind of my “away message” for the next few days, as I head out with our grown kids, their beloveds, and the grandbabies for a few days at a lake house. Let it also be your encouragement: find the time to take a restorative break in the coming months. It is good, and right, and faithful to do so.
Sabbath: it’s not just a good idea, it’s the law!
